The garden at Villa Harteneck presents itself quite openly to the
passer-by, protected only by a fence rather than hidden behind high walls. Its splendid layout, surrounded by low yew
hedges, extends between the terrace and a pergola opposite. The rectangular garden looks spacious while still maintaining a sense of
privacy. It contains an oval pool in the centre of the lawn with a jetting fountain and a smaller fountain in front of the benches by the
pergola. There are round flower beds, paths and two groups of seating at the
side, one of which includes a lovely circular bench under the old limes. Somewhat deeper stretches a landscaped section with pleasant paths which one can reach from Fontanestrasse through an entrance between plots 13 and 17. The house and garden were designed by Adolf Wollenberg in 1911/12, in the style of a classical Italian country
residence. In the 1980’s, the Department for the Preservation of Historic Buildings and Monuments restored the garden which was completely overgrown and opened one of Grunewald’s loveliest villa gardens to the
public. While access to the villa was not previously possible, it can now be visited thanks to the new
occupier, Floristry and Decoration KG. Exquisite designer furniture, Italian garden accessories and tasteful knick-knacks are sold in the splendid ground-floor rooms and on the raised garden
terrace, - things that seem made especially for this delightful place. |
