The
hundred-year-old grain and fodder store which dates back to the
founding of Wannsee and in the 1970's was still trading, is now decorated
with articles from southern Europe. Pots and statuettes made of Italian
terracotta, grapevines and citrus trees lie like a second layer over the
roughly plastered pastoral idyll. The rural manufacturing spirit is still
alive, both in the wholefood shop and cafe which have moved into the
former stables, and in the courtyard with its potted plants,
ceramics, baskets and garden furniture. The present owner, - an actor and
nephew of the fodder merchant, had more in mind than simply creating a
Mediterranean atmosphere. At the heart of the Galerie Mutter Fourage is a
dense programme of events marked by sumptuous market festivals in spring
and autumn. Exhibitions are mounted in an outbuilding which has been
converted into a galery and concerts, readings and theatrical performances
take place in the large barn. The galery is particularly concerned with
artistic and cultural themes which can be traced back to this
south-western tip of Berlin. Their most recent in-house publication for
instance, is devoted to Wannseer gardens. Max Liebermann had a
summer-house built for him at the Grosse Wannsee in 1910 and is honoured
with a birthday performance every year on July 20th. This initiative
should help move forward plans to turn the painter's house into a cultural
centre. It is currrently used by a water- sports club. |
