One reaches the Antiquariat Brandel at the northern end of Schamweberstrasse at a quieter parallel street to Bölschestrasse in its lively provincial
setting. As well as focusing on literature, art, geography and travel, the owner is particularly interested in local history and the literature of the Friedrichshagen circle of
writers. “In the midst of the turmoil of the city and yet far away from
it,” towards the end of the 19th century a group of writers formed around Wilhelm
Bölsche, Bruno Wille, Wilhelm Spohr and the brothers Julius Hardt and Heinrich
Hardt. Their
libertarian, naturalist and anti-bourgeois ideas and lifestyles seem both fanciful and excitingly
contemporary. Well-known names such as Gustav Landauer, Gerhart Hauptmann and Erich
Mühsam were also occasionally linked with Friedrichshagen and its
writers. The story of Peter Hille, the “vagabond and bohemian” of the group is
touching. In great poverty and dying of hunger, he was rescued and looked after in his last hours by Else
Lasker-Schüler. Katrin Brandel is documenting the great breath of culture that blew through Friedrichshagen in her own
publication, the “Friedrichshagener Hefte.” In the “Zeit-Galerie”
(period gallery) in a shed behind the bookshop, the search for textual and biographical traces of this Friedrichshagener community of “free spirits” is documented in various
exhibitions. |
