At the Flutgraben

While the city was divided, one barely noticed the lagoon world which stretches on both sides of the flood channels to the Spree. At that time, fish were bred directly underneath the Oberfreiarchenbru where Schlesische Strasse, Pushkinallee, Kreuzberg and Treptow converge. In the 18th century, after the straightening out of the Landwehrkanal , the channel became an eastern branch. The modest wooden cottages, landing stages and terraces on its banks have hardly changed, but the pulse that beats here has completely altered. Although still makeshift, the "Club of Visionaries" has set up one of the most exotic bars in Berlin on the boards of the Treptower river bank. Simple awnings, deckchairs, benches and brightly coloured chairs are casually separated from the water by rope and old fish crates planted with flowers. The visitor is presented with a place somewhere between Holland, the Pacific and the fact that the channel in the far south-eastern part of West Berlin was, for a long time, hidden under the shadow of the border crossing. On the Kreuzberg side opposite, the whole length of the riverbank is taken up by a restaurant named "The Open-Air Swimmer". With its short but elegant menu and Sunday brunch it brings a touch of style to the wooden constructions. From here, one gazes upon the Spree, the buildings of the Osthafen and the impressive factory which dominates the bank opposite. With its rounded corners it fits comfortably with the flow of the current. Here, where cars were once repaired, is now the Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben e.V. and its 2yk-Galerie. An open, inviting and inspiring spot that still seems to inhabit a no-man's land between East and West.
