The Arte Luise Kunsthotel is situated between the Charité hospital and the Spree river, opposite the Reichstag (Parliament) building, that Norman Foster crowned with a glass dome. Just around the corner is the Sächsische Landesvertretung (Saxony Embassy and Administration building) which was home to the famous East Berlin artists’ club Die Möwe (The Seagull), before the wall came down. The Hotel building, which dates from 1825, has been completely restored and its thirty guest rooms were opened to the public in 1999.
All the guest rooms are completely unique artistic creations, both in their design and wall decoration. They are called things like Safari, Three Ladies in Red and Mammel’s Dream, Samarkand and Japanese Garden. A catalogue issued for the hotel’s tenth anniversary is a helpful guide to orient yourself by, should you get lost in this imaginative labyrinth.
The courtyard originally opened directly onto the S-Bahn tracks; however, in 2003 a new building was erected, cutting the tracks off from the courtyard and sheltering visitors from the noise of the trains. This put an end to the free earplugs and meant that the number of rooms could be increased to fifty.
The Hotel Arte Luise is refreshingly unconventional and offers enormous variety – from the art works and the combination of traditional Berlin-style rooms with high ceilings and air-conditioned newly-built guest rooms, to the spacious, luxurious living on the first floor and the reasonable attic rooms.
Depending on your choice of room, the artist who created it receives a percentage of the price you pay.
