Canzone, the shop with the proud sub-title "Specialist Shop for World Music" has been in Savignyplatz for over 20 years. It was brought into being by the Berlin Horizonte Festival in 1982. This opened a fascinating perspective on the music and literature of countries and cultures outside Europe and North America to a larger public. Canzone grew from a tango shop via an insider tip on the African scene to a team of professionals in World Music matters, who for years, have almost exclusively attended to this market. Since 1992, the shop has been well housed in one of the arches of the smart Savignypassage, just a few steps from the
"Platz". This is, however, somewhat more difficult to find, situated between Grolman and Uhlandstrasse.Today
although the sounds of Africa and Australia, Latin America and Asia have
been popular for some time in the western musical world, Canzone still remains the first call for specialised advice and clever direct imports of musical traditions from around the globe. |
